Google's AI Weather Whiz: A Game Changer for Photographers
Monday, December 9, 2024
One of its standout features is its ability to predict extreme weather events. For example, it provided an extra 12 hours of warning for a tropical cyclone and excelled at wind power production forecasts. This was compared to an older version of ENS, but Matt Chantry, the machine learning coordinator at ECMWF, sees GenCast as a significant step forward in weather forecasting.
What's even more impressive is that GenCast can generate a 15-day forecast in just eight minutes, while ENS takes hours. "Traditional forecasts are much more expensive computationally compared to GenCast, " says DeepMind's senior research scientist Ilan Price.
The real-world impact of GenCast is yet to be seen, but who wouldn't appreciate better long-term weather forecasts? Google has made GenCast open-source, so its code is available online for everyone to use and improve.
