Grading Schools: A Temporary Halt to Accountability?
TexasThursday, September 19, 2024
The judge's decision to temporarily block the release of grades has sparked debate among educators, politicians, and parents. Some argue that the A-F system is necessary to hold schools accountable and to give parents a sense of how their local schools are performing. Others argue that the system is flawed and that it's unfair to judge schools based on a single test.
One of the main concerns is the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to grade student essays. This change was made without ensuring that it wouldn't impact the test's validity and reliability. Large numbers of students scored zeroes on their written answers last year, which has raised questions about the accuracy of the grades.
The situation is further complicated by the fact that the state has already released projections of how schools would perform on A-F, saying it was important to remain transparent with families. Some school districts in North Texas have already released their own projections, but the judge's decision means that the official grades won't be released after all.
