Graffiti Gets a Big‑Time Home in Suburban Station

Suburban Station, Philadelphia, USAThursday, July 9, 2026
When you walk into Suburban Station from the 16th Street side, the first thing you see is a wide hallway with no walls to decorate. Then you turn right and a huge “train” painted on the wall grabs your attention. Inside that paint‑filled train, every inch is covered with bright graffiti, murals and mosaics. The show is called “Platform X. ” It was created by Step Outside, a group of street artists who want to give graffiti a place outside the alleyways. One artist, known as Doomed Future, explains that Philly galleries rarely show street art. “We want a place of our own, ” he says. Step Outside worked with the nonprofit United Street Art (USA). Together they turned a vacant spot in the station into an art gallery. Most of the pieces are for sale, and all the money goes straight to the creators.
The theme for this year is “USA 250, ” celebrating America’s 250th birthday. Artists painted the Founding Fathers in new ways, like Benjamin Franklin with a crown of thorns and the words “In God We Lust. ” Another piece, “Love is Not Dead, ” shows angry figures holding anarchist flags and a match between traffic cones. The artist said he wants to mix rage with love in the city. The event is not just a display. Visitors can add their own drawings, spray paint or stickers to the walls. Families with kids especially enjoy this hands‑on part of the show. Some people who grew up tagging trains in Philly now see their work as art. A veteran wallwriter, known as Lewis Pittman, says he is glad to see graffiti accepted today. He remembers nights on buses and trains that were later erased by the police. After the current show ends, Step Outside plans a new exhibit in August called “Then and Now. ” It will trace how street art has changed over the years. The organizers want to honor the original artists who started it all. The exhibition runs through the summer, with closing nights on July 10 and 11. Visitors can stay to see more art until the end of the season.
