Green Bay's Sewage Leak: A Quick Cleanup with Minimal Risk
February 12, 2024
Incident Overview
A sewage leak occurred in downtown Green Bay on February 12 due to a contractor's work on temporary sewer lines. The leak was swiftly addressed and cleaned up within 24 hours.
Cleanup Efforts
Nathan Qualls, leader of the Green Bay Metropolitan Sewerage District, confirmed the emergency was over. Workers spent the day:
- Sucking up the sewage
- Rinsing the area with clean water
- Disinfecting sidewalks and parts of the East River Trail
The cleanup concluded around 5 p.m. on February 13.
Source of the Leak
The leak originated from six spots in black pipes, which were intended to divert wastewater from the main sewers. The contractor was preparing these pipes for a larger sewer system renovation. The first leak was detected around 6:15 p.m. near Main Street and North Monroe Avenue, with additional leaks discovered that night, totaling six.
Extent of the Leak
- Volume: Less than half a backyard swimming pool (~2,200 gallons)
- Impact: Sewage entered storm sewers or the East River, but remained on top of the frozen river, making cleanup easier.
Public Health and Safety
Qualls assured that the leak posed minimal public health risk. The area was cordoned off, and NEW Water monitored it through the weekend.
Preventive Measures
Qualls stated that NEW Water will collaborate closely with the contractor to prevent future incidents. The affected pipes will soon be back in use for the larger sewer renovation project.
