Growing Minds, Growing Gardens: A Summer of Discovery for Boston and Cambridge Students
Boston and CambridgeMonday, September 16, 2024
As students work in the gardens, they learn about plant anatomy, native plants, and gardening techniques. They also get to take part in field trips, meet community leaders, and engage in hands-on activities that teach them about the science of plants. And, of course, they get to enjoy the fruits of their labor - literally! In the classroom, students learn to make pesto with their own basil, a fun and delicious way to connect with their newfound knowledge.
But CitySprouts is more than just a summer program. During the academic year, they work with pre-K through fifth graders in 24 public schools, with half in Cambridge and half in Boston. This initiative not only provides students with a unique learning experience but also helps to bridge the gap in science education and access to nature in urban neighborhoods.
So, what can we learn from the CitySprouts Green Team Summer Program? For starters, it shows that even in the most urban of settings, nature can thrive. It highlights the importance of green spaces in our communities and the impact they can have on our well-being. And, perhaps most importantly, it demonstrates the power of hands-on learning and community engagement in shaping the minds and hearts of our next generation.
