Guantánamo Bay: A Dark Spot for Refugees

Guantánamo bay isn't winning any popularity contests these days. It has always been used as a fortress for the government. Why do people flee their homes? They do this to escape persecution and fear. They were seen as criminals by many. They most likely had to do something terrible or they wouldn't be locked up, is what most Americans think. A lot of people know Guantánamo for its dark past. What many people may not know is, Guantánamo has a long history as an offshore prison. This is where refugees face harsh conditions, and the government loves it that way because it avoids investigations and setbacks. Refugees are often detained secretly at this facility. When IRAP received a tip about a fleeing refugee family. They were Cuban people who didn't agree with the government, so they were persecuted in Cuba. Now, when their boat broke down in the sea they were detained by the U. S. Coast Guard. Some refugee families end up being mistreated and tortured. All of this happens during their trial which proves the government and this place is the wrong place for the innocent. “A year into their confinement, a doctor finally assessed the children's needs for physical and psychological care that wasn't available at the base. ” When it comes to having a heart, it's as if the U. S. government has none. “In light of this finding, IRAP threatened to sue the U. S. government, and the family was finally allowed to resettle in a third country. ” Thank goodness this is one story where there is a happy ending. Isn't it? The U. S. government really has no moral compass when it comes to Guantánamo. They had no setup or rights for the refugees held at the facility. Another issue that IRAP investigated is that the government is ignoring their international and domestic laws, only using their power to control more people. Right now, Guantánamo is a hot mess for innocent refugees. So why is it still open?

Shouldn't it be used for the corrupt and those who deserve to be punished? IRAP is all about the people. It speaks with 130 organizations in its fight to close the refugee location which is near the prison in Guantánamo. By the way, it's not the only group. There's plenty more out there who all fight for what is right and just. Upon a historical note, immigrants have been the main focus of fearmongering in the U. S. Guantánamo has a dark past. It has been used to sidestep the law and imprison immigrants, and the U. S. government has executed this detention logic for decades. Fleeing one's home often becomes the focus. The U. S. government finds a way to make fleeing feel like a crime. The feeling of this is not new. The U. S. government treats its own people harshly at the facility. This is part of the U. S. government's strategy. This is Trump's immigration detention system, which is growing in size, expanding even to the point of detaining people living within the United States. Many believe this is the worst of the worst. This is a lazy way for people to feel safe and at ease. The propaganda is about connecting fearmongering with immigrants. It's about globalization and the people. They want to label all immigrants as criminals. The idea is to deport as many people as possible. This is not right. It's a cruel way of thinking and it's not how the U. S. government should be thinking for those struggling to make it in this world at all. Can you imagine having to face this nonsense? This is something that no one deserves. It's pretty terrible, imagining all the problems that people face when they are in the United States illegally. Every innocent casualty deserves fairness and justice is the United States and is truthful. They deserve to thrive and deserve much better in the place they seek refuge.
