Guardian Angels Return: A Sign of New York’s Safety Woes

The Guardian Angels are making a comeback to New York's subways after four years. Founder Curtis Sliwa announced this return due to skyrocketing subway crimes and a recent tragic arson murder. He aims to boost recruitment and training, noting that subway crime has never been worse. The very next day, another violent crime occurred on a subway platform. Mayor Adams' office dismissed this move as a "meaningless stunt, " but many New Yorkers see it differently. They fear for their safety and welcome any visible presence of order. In the past few weeks alone, several violent incidents have occurred on the subways. Murders in the system have shot up by 60% this year, despite lower ridership due to the pandemic.

Governor Hochul's addition of National Guardsmen hasn't solved the issue. The problem lies with soft-on-crime prosecutors and judges who let criminals back onto the streets. Additionally, the Biden administration's open borders policy has brought 58, 000 criminal migrants to New York City. The subways have become dangerous, with riders often sharing space with repeat offenders and mentally distressed individuals.
