Guardians Face Doubleheader Gamble After Weather Delay

Cleveland, Ohio, USASunday, April 5, 2026

Cleveland Guardians Postpone Saturday Night Clash; Sunday Set for Doubleheader

The Cleveland Guardians had to postpone their Saturday night clash with the Chicago Cubs because of bad weather. That left Sunday, April 4, open for a back‑to‑back series at Progressive Field. Two games will decide the winner of this set, and Cleveland is currently up 1‑0 after a comfortable 4‑1 victory on Friday that also marked the team’s 2026 home opener.

Manager Stephen Vogt said the club wants to play both games on Sunday to avoid another trip. He noted that weather in Cleveland can be unpredictable, so the team will take it one hour at a time. The Guardians had built momentum on Friday with two late‑inning home runs and solid pitching, but the pause could make it harder to keep that rhythm.

The two nine‑inning games give little room for error, but each side can add a 27th man to the roster. Cleveland will likely choose an extra reliever rather than a hitter, since starter Joey Cantillo exited Friday after 5.1 innings and the bullpen was stretched thin. Pitchers such as Matt Festa, Shawn Armstrong, Connor Brogdon and Cade Smith have already logged significant innings. The club has several options on the 40‑man roster—Logan Allen, Codi Heuer, Colin Holderman—that could provide fresh arms for Sunday’s doubleheader.

Slade Cecconi is slated to start the first game, followed by Parker Messick in the second. Both pitchers showed promise early in the season against Seattle and Los Angeles. On the batting side, the lineup that was originally set for Saturday will likely shift to the second game because of the change in starting pitchers. The Guardians’ regular lineup, featuring Kyle Manzardo and Bo Naylor, will get a chance to play in the first game against right‑handed starter Edward Cabrera.

If Cleveland wins at least one of Sunday’s games, they will open the 2026 season with a series sweep. Despite early doubts from analysts, the Guardians’ mix of young talent and solid pitching has been finding ways to win.
