Hamas and the US: A Deadlock in Hostage Negotiations
GazaSaturday, March 15, 2025
Hamas has responded by saying they are willing to release the hostages. They mentioned the names of the people they plan to release. This includes an Israeli soldier with American citizenship and the remains of four others. However, the US is not convinced. They say Hamas is only pretending to support the extension while making demands that are not reasonable.
Israel does not believe Hamas will follow through with their promise. They think Hamas is trying to manipulate the families of the hostages. The first phase of the truce ended without a clear plan for what comes next. Talks have restarted in Doha, with both Israel and Hamas sending negotiators.
During the first six weeks of the truce, Palestinian militants released 33 hostages. This included eight dead bodies. In return, Israel released about 1, 800 Palestinian detainees. Israel says Hamas is still holding 24 hostages and the bodies of 35 abductees. This situation is complex and requires careful negotiation.
