A dangerous chemical leak at a refinery in Deer Park, Texas, has left two people dead and at least 35 injured. The incident, which happened on Thursday evening, involved the release of hydrogen sulfide, a highly toxic gas with a distinctive "rotten egg" smell. Officials confirmed the leak at around 6:18 p.m., noting that it started at 4:40 p.m. Hydrogen sulfide is not only flammable but also very harmful, even in small amounts. It can cause mild headaches, eye irritation, and in severe cases, unconsciousness and death. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez mentioned during a press conference that authorities are still investigating if there are more fatalities. Witnesses saw numerous ambulances and two Life Flight helicopters at the scene. Harris County Hazmat Response crews were also on-site, working to contain the situation. The refinery, operated by Pemex, processes crude oil from various countries to produce gasoline, aviation fuel, diesel, and ship fuel. An hour and a half after the initial report, Pemex officials released a statement, confirming the gas release and the containment efforts. They assured the public that the situation was isolated and that air quality was being closely monitored. Shelter-in-place orders in Pasadena and Deer Park were lifted after Harris County Pollution Control completed air monitoring and detected no further hazardous chemicals. Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo expressed her condolences to the affected families and reassured the public that appropriate measures were being taken.
