Health Boost for Coastal B. C. : New Ferry Routes in Medical Travel Program

B. C. Health Minister Josie Osborne has announced an expansion of the Travel Assistance Program (TAP) to include seven privately managed ferry routes. This means coastal communities on Vancouver Island and the mainland will have easier access to non-emergency medical specialists. The program, with an annual budget of $14. 5 million, already supports thousands of patients who travel by air, ground, or BC Ferries each year. Paul Adams, head of the BC Rural Health Network, is thrilled about the ferry route inclusion. He notes that these communities often struggle to access specialists. However, Adams also points out some gaps. During the election, Premier David Eby promised to boost TAP by $5 million to cover mileage when flights aren't feasible. He also promised upfront cost coverage instead of reimbursements.

Osborne confirmed the government's commitment to expanding medical travel support but couldn't provide details on Eby's election promises. Adams further emphasized the need to cover out-of-pocket expenses for longer stays and improve clarity on available services. He also called for community consultations and broader funding for serious diseases beyond cancer. A recent report at UBCM called for a stable, dedicated fund with clear money allocation for different ailments.
