Health Concerns Surround Pope Francis' Trips Amid Flu-Like Symptoms
Vatican CityMonday, September 23, 2024
Pope Francis' ability to keep up with his demanding schedule has been a subject of discussion among his followers. His recent health issues have included chronic knee pain and other mobility issues, which have led to the use of a wheelchair for the past two years. In November 2023, he canceled a visit to Dubai for the U.N. climate conference on the advice of his doctors due to lung inflammation. He also has only one lung and has undergone two invasive surgeries in the past few years.
As Pope Francis prepares to visit Belgium and Luxembourg, he will need to address the ongoing issues of clergy sexual abuse in the region. Recently, Belgium has witnessed widespread cases of abuse and cover-ups exposed over the last two decades. In 2010, a scandal broke in Belgium that led to the resignation of Roger Vangheluwe, the Bishop of Bruges, after admitting to abusing his nephew for years.
