Health Insurance Under Biden: Nearly 24 Million Sign Up for Obamacare

Affordable Care Act (ACA) plans have seen a huge boost under President Joe Biden, with nearly 24 million people already signed up for 2025. This is almost twice the number from when Donald Trump was in office. The growth is due to bigger federal subsidies, better outreach, and an easier enrollment process. The current enrollment includes about 3. 2 million new customers and over 20. 4 million returning ones. Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra mentioned that this is double the number from the previous administration. In 2021, during Trump's term, about 12 million people had signed up. Trump tried to make the ACA less appealing, but his efforts didn't succeed. However, the current gains might be at risk. The extra federal subsidies, which were started earlier in Biden’s term, are set to end by the end of 2025. Whether they will be extended depends on Trump and the Republican-led Congress. During the 2024 campaign, Trump at first wanted to end the ACA again. Later, he suggested running it well while creating a better plan, but he didn’t give details.

Biden’s term saw a drop in the uninsured rate to a record low of 7. 6% in the second quarter of 2024. Over 300 million Americans now have health insurance, including more than 100 million through the ACA, Medicaid, and CHIP programs. Low-income Americans, who can get plans with little to no premiums thanks to the extra subsidies, have driven the ACA enrollment growth. These subsidies also make insurance more affordable for the middle class. Biden’s administration has also increased funding for outreach and made it easier to verify incomes. This has led some Republicans to worry about people getting subsidies who aren’t eligible. If the extra subsidies expire, around 4 million people could lose their insurance, according to the Urban Institute. Extending them would cost $335 billion over 10 years, according to the Congressional Budget Office. Republicans are trying to cut spending to offset the cost of their 2017 tax cuts. Biden’s team is urging them to renew the subsidies to prevent a big increase in premiums for millions of Americans.
