Healthcare Costs Pushing Lagos Families into Poverty

In Lagos, Nigeria, the high cost of healthcare is a big problem. Many families are struggling to pay for medical care. This can force them into poverty. Our study looked at how common and what causes these big healthcare costs, known as Catastrophic Healthcare Expenditure (CHE), in Lagos households. Lagos is a big city, and health expenses can be very high. We found that many families spend a lot of their income on medical care. This can leave them with little money for other important things like food and school fees.

There are several reasons why healthcare costs get so high. Sometimes, people need to see a doctor often or have a serious illness that requires expensive treatment. Other times, they might live in a place where healthcare services are expensive or hard to reach. We also discovered that families with more members or those living in poor areas are more likely to face CHE. This is because they may have more people to care for and less money to spend. It's important to think about how we can make healthcare more affordable. Maybe the government can help with the costs, or maybe there can be more clinics in different parts of the city. Whatever the solution, it's clear that something needs to be done to protect families from the financial burden of healthcare.
