A single alteration in the KCNQ1 gene, swapping a D for an N at position 673, stops the heart from speeding up its electrical pulse when adrenaline is present. The change weakens a potassium channel that normally helps reset the heart’s rhythm after each beat. In people carrying this mutation, the expected quickening of the heartbeat during stress is missing, potentially raising the risk for irregular heartbeats.
Scientists found that the variant makes the channel less responsive to signals that normally trigger a faster heartbeat. This could explain why some patients experience unexplained heart rhythm problems when their bodies fight infection or exercise hard. Researchers are now looking at how this mutation might be linked to sudden cardiac events and whether new drugs could restore the missing response.
