Heat Wave Warning: Storms Loom Over Des Moines

High temperatures are set to stay above 110 degrees for the next couple of days, but that isn’t all. Weather forecasters predict a window of severe storms from 9 p. m. Sunday night until about 6 a. m. Monday morning, mainly affecting the upper half of Iowa and especially Des Moines. The threat level is rated two out of five for most of the state, dropping to one in the south.

The biggest danger during these storms will be strong winds, but hail and heavy rain are also possible. Even as the heat continues, temperatures should ease a little on Tuesday into the upper 90s. Residents are urged to stay safe during this heat wave. The best ways to protect yourself include taking frequent breaks in air‑conditioned or shaded areas, drinking plenty of water, and never leaving children or pets alone in vehicles. The National Weather Service has issued these warnings to help people prepare and stay out of harm’s way while the heat stays intense.
