Heating up Organs: How Radiofrequency Ablation Works in Ex Vivo Liver, Kidney, and Lung

Ever wondered how doctors can treat tumors without surgery? Radiofrequency ablation, or RFA, uses heat to destroy tumors. A recent study checked out how this works in different organs – liver, kidney, and lung. They used a special device called the Dophi™ R150E RFA system. This device has tiny sensors that measure temperature with great accuracy.

The scientists heated up these organs using either one or two electrodes. They found that the heat spread differently in each organ. For instance, the liver got super hot, but the lung stayed cooler. Also, using two electrodes for a shorter time created larger, rounder burn areas than using one electrode for longer. This study shows that RFA works well, but the settings should be adjusted based on the organ type and tumor properties. Precise temperature tracking and careful planning are vital for better results.
