Heatwave Hits the Northeast, Rain Arrives Next Week

Northeast United States, USAWednesday, June 3, 2026

Mild start, warm surge ahead

The week before this one was mild for most of the Northeast, but a warm spell is on the way. A high‑pressure ridge will push hot air from the south into places like Washington, D.C., New York City, and Boston. By Friday, these cities could see temperatures 10 to 15 degrees above the long‑term average. Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and New York City might even hit 90 °F by weekend’s end. Some areas, such as Baltimore and Bridgeport, could set new daily highs.

Heat‑then‑rain pattern returns

On the flip side, spring’s pattern of heat followed by rain is returning. A low‑pressure system will drift east from the Great Lakes on Saturday evening, bringing showers to New England and the Mid‑Atlantic by Sunday. The rain will cool things down, with temperatures falling into the 60s and low 70s from Saturday through Monday. Boston has already had rain on 11 of the last 13 weekends this spring, so the forecast isn’t surprising.

Pressure dynamics at play

The weather shift is driven by pressure changes: a ridge of high pressure keeps the heat in, while a trough of low pressure pulls moisture and cooler air from the north. This tug‑of‑war between high and low pressure is what makes the Northeast’s weather so variable.

Tropical activity in the distance

While a tropical depression has started to form in the eastern Pacific, it is still too early for any serious storm. The focus remains on the coming rain and the brief heatwave that will touch many cities this weekend.
