Help Safely and Smart: Assisting LA Wildfire Victims

Wildfires have turned the Los Angeles region into a disaster zone. Thousands of acres burned, structures destroyed, and people displaced. The government stepped in to help, and so did people from around the world. But how can you make a real difference without falling victim to scams? Long-term help is key. Patricia McIlreavy, head of the Center for Disaster Philanthropy, says don't just think about immediate needs. Like with the Covid-19 pandemic, people will need different things as time goes on. Some might need help with child care, others with schooling. Giving them access to their own kitchens can restore dignity and independence.

When donating, be specific. Brea Burkholz from Direct Relief warns against dropping off random items at shelters. They often can't handle the sudden influx. Instead, volunteer your time or connect directly with families who need specific items. Be wary of scammers. California officials have warned about scams taking advantage of the crisis. Don't fall for it. Before donating, do your research. Stick to trusted organizations that have been vetted.
