Helping Hands: How Hollywood is Aiding Wildfire Victims

Wildfires are devastating Los Angeles and its surrounding areas, but don't worry—help is on the way! The Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF), a nonprofit supported by big names in Hollywood, is stepping in to lend a hand. This time, they're not just making movies; they're making a difference. The EIF has launched a program to collect donations from the public and distribute them to firefighters, first responders, and families who have lost their homes and pets. You might remember the EIF from their work during the 2023 Maui fires. Alongside Oprah Winfrey and Dwayne Johnson, they raised $60 million and gave it directly to residents in just six months. But their good deeds don't stop there. In 2020 alone, they granted over $14 million to more than 100 organizations for disaster relief. Nicole Sexton, the EIF's president and CEO, shared her thoughts on the situation. "Our hearts go out to everyone affected by these wildfires, " she said. "There's an urgent need for shelter, food, water, medical care, and even care for pets that have been displaced. "

The EIF's fund for this disaster is called "Defy: Disaster, " and it's sponsored by City National Bank. In the past, they've directed millions to help first responders and survivors of other disasters, like the Camp and Woolsey Fires in 2018. The wildfires have been brutal, burning over 10, 000 acres in areas like the Pacific Palisades and Malibu since Tuesday morning. Hundreds of structures have been destroyed, and sadly, two lives have been lost in Altadena, north of Pasadena. Even premieres and events around LA have been postponed or canceled due to the fires. California Governor Gavin Newsom and President Joe Biden are keeping a close eye on the situation, which has led to a state of emergency being declared. But with the EIF and other organizations helping out, there's hope that those affected will get the support they need.
