High School Sports Scores: Thursday's Big Wins

Thursday was a big day for high school sports in the area. The boys' hockey teams had some close games. Sauk Rapids-Rice squeaked by River Lakes 5-4, and St. Cloud Crush won a high-scoring game against Fergus Falls, 8-7. Hermantown, ranked #2 in the state, had a dominant win over Cathedral, 6-0. In girls' hockey, Sartell-Sauk Rapids beat River Lakes 1-0. In boys' basketball, Apollo defeated Tech 77-59. Sauk Rapids-Rice beat Sartell-St. Stephen 72-50. Brainerd had a strong win over ROCORI, 61-40. Upsala also did well, beating St. John's Prep 78-35. Senior Michael DeMars led the Johnnies in scoring with 14 points. Girls' basketball saw some exciting games too. Cathedral won against Melrose 69-57, with Keira Alexander scoring 25 points. Sophia Sinclair and Katie Pfeiffer also contributed with 17 and 10 points respectively. Cathedral is now 8-7 and will play at Pierz on Thursday. Other games included Dassel-Cokato beating Sauk Rapids-Rice 96-37 and East Central winning against St. John's Prep 79-35.

In dance, Cathedral continued its winning streak, securing the Granite Ridge Conference Championship for the 13th year in a row. They swept both the Jazz and Kick competitions at Pierz. Some standout dancers included Abby Silver, Natalie Granowski, Mary Watry, and Maddie Baldwin for Jazz, and Mary Watry, Lindsay Paul, Bayley Schneider, and Abby Silver for Kick. Boys' swimming saw Sartell-St. Stephen win against Cathedral-Tech-ROCORI-Becker 103-81. In diving, Dom Kremer placed third and Rhys Mohs finished fourth. Joey Krueger also had notable performances, placing second in both the 200 IM and 500 free. The wrestling teams saw some action too. New London-Spicer beat Tech-Apollo-Cathedral-Granite City Baptist 42-33. Litchfield-Dassel-Cokato also won against the same team 33-31. Jack Hamak stood out with two wins, one at 127# and another at 133#.
