High School Sports Update: New Plans and Big Changes
The Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) is ramping up for a packed schedule of events. In Montgomery, the association’s team is busy preparing for next week’s Summer Conference and All‑Star Sports Week, where coaches, administrators, and schools converge to discuss rules and logistics.
Mandatory July 24 Session
A required session on July 24 will cover:
- Legal matters
- Medical guidelines
- Other essential information for schools
New Communications Lead
Long‑time Birmingham sports broadcaster Scott Griffin has joined the communications office, stepping into the role previously held by Hall of Famer Ron Ingram. Griffin’s experience and enthusiasm are expected to inject fresh energy into the position.
Executive Director Updates
Heath Harmon, the AHSAA Executive Director, highlighted several key topics:
- Private School Advisory Committee: Satisfaction with the new committee and appointment of Buster Daniel as associate director to serve as liaison.
- Private School Playoff Expansion: Ongoing efforts to broaden playoff participation, with new pathways slated for approval in the coming weeks.
Transfer Rules via DragonFly
Transfers will now be handled more transparently through the DragonFly system. Schools must record any student who moved after the third day of their seventh‑grade year as a transfer. This change aims to improve data accuracy and support fair play, with the understanding that properly managed transfers should not affect eligibility.
Probation for Football Programs
The AHSAA has placed restrictive probation on the football programs at Mary G. Montgomery and Pell City, suspending head coaches for a year and banning postseason play. The schools will meet with the Central Board on July 29 to discuss compliance and potential relief.
Mobile Hosts Major Events
Mobile is set to host major events, including:
- A five‑day football championships (Super 7)
- Two All‑Star games
While some have suggested moving the All‑Stars to another city, Harmon confirmed no changes are planned and praised Mobile for its support of statewide sporting events.
