High‑School Coders Show Off Their Own Games

San Luis Obispo, California, USAThursday, May 28, 2026

Canyon High’s computer science class hosted its annual Demo Day during lunch, giving visitors an inside look at the apps and games students crafted throughout the semester.

A Capstone Experience

Students gathered in Josh Underwood’s classroom to see projects emerging from a capstone program that challenges learners with real‑world deadlines. Underwood emphasized the goal of teaching teamwork and interview skills, preparing graduates to stand out in both the job market and higher education.

  • Idea Pitching: Teams first pitch concepts, then vote on the most promising ones.
  • Coding from Scratch: Winning ideas split into groups that start coding from the ground up.

Leveraging AI for Efficiency

This year, many teams integrated artificial‑intelligence tools to decompose tasks into smaller steps and monitor progress. The result was a smoother development process and higher quality output.

Student Highlights

  • Vianney Segovia (Senior) & Reese Dagting (Senior):
  • Described the project cycle as a crash course in communication, teamwork, and self‑management.
  • Completed a 2‑D game titled “Alice and the White Rabbit” in under two weeks.
  • Developed a 3‑D title, “Catacomb Hotel.”

Praise from the Community

  • Josh Underwood praised the students’ drive and noted the challenge of maintaining motivation throughout the project cycle.
  • Erin Wilson, board clerk, applauded the initiative, highlighting how it cultivates a culture of hard work and excitement that boosts student engagement both in school and beyond.
