Great news! The world is seeing fewer new HIV infections and deaths. This is a big win, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, where numbers have dropped the most. But, there's still work to do. Some places, like Eastern Europe and the Middle East, are seeing more new cases. We're far from the 2030 target to virtually stop AIDS-related deaths.
Preventative pills called PrEP are doing a fantastic job. They cut the risk of getting HIV from sex by 99%. Countries like France want to make these pills more available to anyone who needs them.
For people who already have HIV, there are treatments that can make the virus almost vanish in their blood. This is great for stopping the virus from spreading.
There's a new drug called lenacapavir that's looking really promising. It can stop HIV infections 100% and only needs to be taken twice a year. But, it's pricey, and poorer countries might not be able to afford it.
A vaccine for HIV is still out of reach. But, some patients have been cured through tough treatments for other diseases. Don't count on that for most people, though.
