HIV-Positive Organ Transplants Now Allowed
USATuesday, November 26, 2024
This isn't new globally. In 2010, doctors in South Africa showed HIV-positive organs could work. The U. S. started allowing research on deceased donors in 2013. Then, in 2019, Johns Hopkins University did the first kidney transplant from an HIV-positive living donor.
So far, there have been 500 such transplants in the U. S. This shows how this change can really make a difference.
