Hollywood's Big Weekend: Sinners and Minecraft Battle It Out
North AmericaSunday, April 20, 2025
Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Coogler have a proven track record of success, having worked together on films like "Creed" and "Black Panther. " Their collaboration on "Sinners" further cements their status as Hollywood talents who can draw in audiences based on their names alone. Warner Bros. was so eager to work with Coogler that they agreed to a rare deal where Coogler will eventually own the film rights for "Sinners" after 25 years.
The success of "Sinners" and "A Minecraft Movie" is a welcome boost for Warner Bros. , which has had a couple of theatrical flops recently. The studio is committed to bringing a variety of films to moviegoers and is thrilled with the positive response to these two movies. However, the box office is still recovering from the pandemic, with revenues 5% ahead of last year but nearly 29% behind 2019. Upcoming releases like Marvel's "Thunderbolts, " Tom Cruise's "Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, " and Disney's "Lilo & Stitch" remake will be crucial in boosting the box office further.
In other box office news, "The King of Kings, " an animated faith-based film about the life of Jesus, collected $17 million in its second weekend, a slight decline from its debut. The film, backed by Angel Studios, has generated $45 million domestically so far. Meanwhile, Disney's "The Amateur, " a vigilante spy film starring Rami Malek, dropped to No. 4 with $6. 8 million. The movie has grossed just $27 million domestically and $64 million worldwide, shaping up to be Disney's second big screen flop following "Snow White. " A24's combat thriller "Warfare" rounded out the top five with $4. 8 million, a great result for an indie film. However, "Warfare" needs to keep performing well to turn a profit. Elsewhere, "The Wedding Banquet, " a modern retelling of Ang Lee’s 1993 queer comedy of errors, fizzled in its debut with just $922, 906 from 1, 139 theaters.
