Hot Days and Violent Crimes: How Temperature Affects Crime Rates in US Cities

The most common pattern was the inverted J, meaning crime rates peak at high temperatures, except when it gets extremely hot. Overall, violent crime was about 3% higher at hotter temperatures compared to more moderate ones. It was also higher when the temperature was moderate compared to cold.

Interestingly, cities with more green spaces, lower latitudes, and more air-conditioned homes saw less of an increase in crime on hot days. This suggests that places with better heat management strategies might be better equipped to handle the temperature-crime link. Climate change also plays a role here. Cities with temperature anomalies—days that are much hotter than usual—saw higher risks of violent crime. This hints at the broader effects of a warming planet on urban safety.
