House Panel to Vote on Releasing Gaetz Report
Washington DC, USAWednesday, November 20, 2024
The ethics committee is evenly split between parties, so just one Republican joining the Democrats could lead to the report's release. However, prominent Republicans, like House speaker Mike Johnson, warn against this, as Gaetz is now a private citizen. Johnson believes releasing the report could open a can of worms.
Other Republicans, such as Senator Markwayne Mullin, think the report should at least be available to senators who will vote on Gaetz's nomination. Democrats seem open to releasing the report, with nearly 100 signing a letter requesting its release. Representative Susan Wild, the top Democrat on the ethics committee, supports its release, citing precedent for releasing reports on former members who resigned amid scandal.
If the report is made public, it could harm Gaetz's chances of Senate confirmation. Trump has considered using recess appointments to bypass the confirmation process.
