How Ants and Plants Dance with Temperature

Ever thought about how ants and plants hang out together? It's all about mutual benefit. Some plants make sweet treats called extrafloral nectaries (EFNs) for ants. In return, ants guard the plants against hungry critters. But what happens when it gets hot? A study in Brazil's Caatinga dry forest found that when temperatures rise, the ant-plant party can get a little less diverse. Scientists watched 14 plant species and their ant friends over 12 months.

They measured leaf temperatures and ant visits. They also checked the sizes of the sweet treats (EFNs). Turns out, the temperature of the leaves matters more than the size of the treats. When it's hotter, fewer ant species are around, and those that stick around have less variety in how well they handle the heat. So, as our planet warms, these helpful ant-plant partnerships might become more vulnerable.
