How COVID Variants Delta and Omicron Latch On: A Closer Look

The COVID-19 pandemic has been a global challenge. Two variants, Delta and Omicron, have raised eyebrows due to their potential to spread more easily and dodge our immune system. This study used computer simulations to understand how these variants interact with a key receptor in our body, called ACE2, and with antibodies. Researchers created models of the part of the variants that binds to cells, known as the RBD, and then virtually connected them to ACE2 and two antibodies (REGN10933 and REGN10987).

They also ran simulations to see how these complexes would behave over time. Interestingly, both variants showed stronger bonds with ACE2 than the original virus. Moreover, mutations in the RBD helped these variants evade antibody neutralization. This highlights the need to constantly monitor viral changes and adjust our responses accordingly.
