How Did Hurricane Milton Become So Powerful?

Hurricane Milton surprised everyone by growing so fast and strong. It started small, but quickly got bigger and stronger. This happened because of very warm water in the Gulf of Mexico. Also, a process called "eyewall replacement" made it even bigger. Milton's winds reached over 175 mph, which is very unusual for a hurricane in October. Scientists were amazed at how quickly it got stronger. The hurricane started differently than most. It came from the eastern Pacific Ocean and then moved into the Gulf of Mexico. This gave it a special spin, which helped it grow. As it got bigger, it pulled air and energy from the warm ocean. This made the pressure in the center drop quickly, and the winds got much stronger.

But then something strange happened. Milton got a new eyewall, which made it bigger but a little weaker. This is like a snake shedding its skin. After shedding, it can grow stronger again if conditions are right. Milton also changed its path a bit, which can affect how much storm surge an area gets. If it stays on its current path, places south of its eye could see a lot of water pushed onto the shore. Even though Milton is weakening a bit as it approaches land, it is still very dangerous. Climate change might have made it worse, just like other recent hurricanes. This hurricane season was expected to be very active, but it was quiet until late September when Milton appeared.
