How Different Cultures Link Society and Religion on Wikipedia

Ever wondered how different cultures around the world connect various social ideas and religions? Researchers recently analyzed the Google matrix of Wikipedia articles from eight different language editions: English, Arabic, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Russian, and Chinese. They focused on 23 societal concepts and 17 religions, using an algorithm to simplify the complex network of links between these articles. Surprisingly, they found that the connections were stronger within groups of similar topics. Societal concepts like Law, Society, Communism, Liberalism, and Capitalism tended to link more among themselves, as did religions like Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Chinese folk religion. However, the links between these two main groups—society concepts and religions—were significantly weaker.

The study identified key influencers within each group. For societal concepts, Law, Society, Communism, Liberalism, and Capitalism had the most impact. Among religions, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Chinese folk religion were the most influential. But here’s where it gets interesting. The researchers compared how different cultures viewed these concepts and religions. They found both similarities and differences across the eight language editions, providing a quantitative look at how cultures perceive and connect these ideas.
