Usually, doctors look at cancer samples to find out what kind of cancer we're dealing with.  They want to know the cancer's genetic makeup. DNA test will help them know the best treatment.  This is part of a thing called genetic profiling.  There is a downside.  This process is pretty expensive.  If patients need multiple surgeries just to get the cancer DNA sample, there's an increased risk of complications.

This study wanted to find out more about this.  A research team focused on thyroid cancer.  This cancer can spread far from its starting point, even to other organs.  This spreading, or metastasis, is often the cause of thyroid cancer deaths.  The team was curious, do the cancer cells change their DNA when they spread?

She asked if the DNA from a thyroid cancer sample from a patient's distant organs would look the same as the one from the primary tumor?

Overall, thy research was inconclusive about the differences in the genetic profiles.  They realized that sampling only one site can miss important details.

   There is a need for more research to understand if the genetic changes in cancer cells will impact treatment decisions.
