People found it easier to understand signs that had slight changes in handshape. But if the location or movement of the sign was off, it was much harder to understand. Interestingly, some details within these changes had a bigger impact than others, similar to how certain sounds in spoken languages can make a big difference. This finding supports the idea that there might be a common structure for all languages, no matter if they're spoken or signed.
