How Good Are AI Models at Helping with Mental Health?
WorldwideThursday, January 30, 2025
Some people might think, "Well, they understand language, so they should understand feelings too, right? " Not quite. Language is one thing, but emotions and mental health are a whole different ball game. Experts are concerned that these AI models might not always give the best advice or explain things in a way that makes sense.
There have been big leaps in how AI can process language. BERT, developed by Google, and GPT, from OpenAI, are great examples. They've changed how we think about AI's ability to understand and generate text. But now, it's time to think about how well they can handle something as sensitive as mental health.
The bottom line is, we need more research to figure out if LLMs can be truly trusted in the mental health field. It's not just about whether they can talk like humans; it's about whether they can help humans in a meaningful way.
