How Our Brains Use Motion to Understand the World
Sunday, December 1, 2024
In a series of experiments, people were asked to identify themselves and others using different types of displays. In one experiment, they recognized their own walking patterns from simple moving dots. In another, they identified themselves from how the environment changed as they walked. And in a third, they did it from videos taken while walking outside. Even though these displays didn't look like people or walking, people could still tell who was who.
So, our brains are pretty smart. They can figure out what's happening just by how things move and change. This isn't affected by how something looks or where we're standing. All this is thanks to something called the laws of physics. These rules keep everything in the universe in check, including how we see the world.
