HPV in Jeddah: Knowledge Gaps and High-Risk Genotypes

In Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, a recent study shed light on the prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV), a common sexually transmitted infection that can cause genital warts and various cancers like cervical, anal, penile, and oropharyngeal. With over 10 million women at risk of HPV-related cervical cancer, the research aimed to understand the local situation. Scientists analyzed pap smear samples from 106 women visiting King Abdulaziz University Hospital. They found that 15% of these women were positive for HPV, with HPV 16 being the most common type, particularly among women aged 35-44. Shockingly, over 60% of the participants didn't know the link between HPV and cervical cancer or that vaccines were available.

This lack of awareness highlights a significant knowledge gap. The results underscore the need for better HPV surveillance and public health interventions in Saudi Arabia. Vaccination programs, increased screening, and educational campaigns could help reduce the high prevalence of high-risk HPV genotypes, especially among uninformed populations and high-risk age groups. The study provides a solid foundation for improving HPV prevention strategies and lowering the disease burden.
