This accident broke multiple bones in her ankle and lower leg. Doctors at NYU Langone Health had to rebuild her left leg with a two-hour surgery. The road to recovery was tough. Wawrzyniak endured months of physical therapy to regain her strength and ultimately surpass her pre-accident abilities. The Brooklyn-based adventurer had only been ice climbing for a month when the incident happened in February 2022. Despite being new to the sport, her determination and love for activity pushed her through. She used hiking poles as crutches and even did floor exercises right after surgery. Gradually, she learned to walk again, though it felt like she was a "zombie" at first. By her birthday in May, she was walking on the beach. By September, she was bouldering again.

Her resilience didn’t stop there. Even after a year, she was still limping. Determined not to let the injury define her, she consulted a specialist. The doctor noted her complicated fracture and predicted she might limp forever. Unsatisfied with this outcome, Wawrzyniak sought further treatment. Her dedication paid off. Today, Wawrzyniak is climbing harder grades than before and hopes to ice climb again soon.
