President Trump seems to have set his sights on a surprising new acquisition: the Arctic island of Greenland. Recently, on Air Force One, he shared his belief that the US will soon control the territory. "I think we're going to have it, " Trump said, claiming that Greenland's 57, 000 residents want to join the US. He even suggested that taking over Greenland is about securing global freedom. Trump's interest in Greenland isn't new. He's been eyeing the island since his re-election. But his latest comments come after a contentious phone call with Denmark's prime minister, Mette Frederiksen. Five European officials described the call as "horrendous, " with Trump reportedly threatening Denmark with tariffs if they don't sell Greenland. Denmark, which controls Greenland, isn't having it. They say Greenland isn't for sale. Greenland's own prime minister, Múte Egede, agrees. He's open to closer ties with the US, like in mining, but not a full takeover. Denmark's defence committee chair, Rasmus Jarlov, even said Denmark wouldn't hand over its citizens to the US against their will.

Greenland's location makes it a hotspot for geopolitical interests. As the climate crisis worsens, the island's melting ice is revealing valuable resources like oil and rare minerals. It's also opening up new shipping routes. Plus, Greenland hosts a US military base with a missile early warning system. History buffs will know that the US has had its eyes on Greenland before. In 1917, President Woodrow Wilson promised Denmark that Greenland would always be theirs. If Denmark were to sell, the UK would have first dibs, thanks to a 1917 agreement. Trump hasn't ruled out using economic or military pressure to make his Greenland dream a reality. He's even suggested Canada could join the US as a state. But for now, Greenland remains under Danish control.
