Icefire Over Pine Island Glacier: A Natural Mystery
AntarcticaWednesday, October 30, 2024
Scientists spotted this rare phenomenon thanks to a NASA satellite earlier this month. Sea smoke isn't uncommon, but seeing it around Pine Island Glacier is unusual because this region is usually cloudy. Pine Island Glacier is a crucial part of Antarctica, acting like a plumbing system for the massive ice sheet. It sends ice into the ocean, and this flow has been increasing since the 1990s due to warm air, water, and less snow.
Along with its neighbor, Thwaites Glacier, Pine Island Glacier is losing ice fast. If these glaciers keep melting, they could raise sea levels by a few feet. That's scary because they also help hold back the rest of the Antarctic ice sheet, which could raise sea levels by a shocking 10 feet if it collapses.
