Illinois Says Goodbye to Fluorescent Bulbs
Starting now, stores in Illinois can't sell or give away certain fluorescent bulbs with screw or bayonet bases. In 2027, the ban will also cover pin-base compact fluorescents and linear fluorescents.
Why the Change?
Some folks, like state Sen. Adriane Johnson, worry about the toxic stuff inside these bulbs. They say it's bad for our health and the planet. A report even found that most of these bulbs end up in the trash, releasing mercury into the environment.
Not Everyone's On Board
State Rep. Nicole La Ha voted for the law but thinks lawmakers should focus on easy, affordable fixes. She's not a fan of extra rules that might hurt small businesses.
The Shift to LEDs
Remember when everyone was told to switch to compact fluorescents? Yeah, that was a thing. But now, it seems like LEDs are the new favorite. Vermont already banned these bulbs, and Illinois is following suit.
The Cost Factor
Tosi Ufodike, a political figure, thinks about the cost. She wants energy-efficient lighting but wonders if it's too much for regular folks. With prices rising, many are just trying to make ends meet.
