Budget Reduction Approved Despite Increasing Disasters

Indonesia's government has decided to reduce the budget for Basarnas, its main rescue agency. This decision comes as the country faces an increasing number of disasters. A parliamentary panel approved the cuts, reducing the budget by 69.38 billion rupiah (about 4.5%). The funds will be redirected to other programs, including free meals and defense.

Indonesia's Vulnerability to Natural Disasters

Indonesia is located in a highly active disaster zone, sitting on the Pacific Ring of Fire. This region is prone to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. In January alone, floods and landslides killed at least 34 people, with many still missing. Last year, a cyclone caused floods and landslides, resulting in 1,200 deaths and displacing over one million people.

Basarnas' Struggle for Resources

The Finance Ministry proposed the budget cuts, which were approved by the parliamentary panel. Mohammad Syafii, the head of Basarnas, accepted the decision but emphasized the need for improvements. He suggested creating local offices in all regions, as there are currently only 38 offices for 514 regions.

Committee Acknowledges the Need for More Funds

The committee recognizes that natural disasters are a significant problem and that Basarnas requires more funding. However, they proceeded with the cuts, stating that while Basarnas' work is commendable, their capacity will be limited without sufficient funds.
