Inhumane Conditions Unveiled at Fulton County Jail

Fulton County Jail in Atlanta has been found to provide conditions that are not only dangerous but also violate the Constitution, according to a recent report by the US Justice Department. The jail struggles to protect inmates from violent attacks, including stabbings and killings. Detention officers have been found to use excessive force without proper justification. Additionally, living conditions and healthcare services fall short of constitutional standards. Inmates are put in restrictive housing units without a fair process and in a discriminatory manner.

The assistant US attorney general, Kristen Clarke, highlighted that these conditions are life-threatening, equating detention at Fulton County Jail to a “death sentence. ” The investigation was launched after the tragic death of Lashawn Thompson in 2022, who died in the jail under horrendous conditions. The report suggests necessary steps to improve conditions, and if not addressed within 49 days, the US Attorney General could file a lawsuit.
