Innovation Spotlight: Healthcare's Big Ideas Get a Chance to Shine

University Hospitals Kingston Foundation (UHKF) is launching an exciting new event called Discovery Den. Think of it as a health-care version of Dragon's Den, where professionals can pitch ideas to improve patient care. Three finalists from Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC) will present their innovative projects to judges. The winner could get up to $50, 000 to turn their idea into reality. Michael Onesi, a UHKF spokesperson, said this event is a cool way to show how donations make a difference. It also encourages people to support these projects. The $50, 000 funding comes from KHSC physicians and a generous donation from a community member.

Initially, over 20 proposals were submitted. Hospital administrators reviewed them and picked the top three based on innovation, cost-effectiveness, and sustainability. These finalists will pitch their ideas at the event on November 13, 2024. One idea is to provide home care for stable heart failure patients, saving them from long hospital stays. Another is using AI to predict and prevent a dangerous heart rhythm called Atrial Fibrillation. The third proposal is a Virtual Patient Observation system to monitor patients at risk of falls or other issues. This could free up hospital resources.
