Iran's Secret Communication Conundrum

The recent explosion of pager devices and walkie-talkies in Lebanon, which Hezbollah claims was orchestrated by Israel, has sent shockwaves throughout the Middle East. In response, Iran's elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has ordered its members to stop using any type of communication device, sparking concerns about the country's communication security. According to a senior Iranian security official, a large-scale operation is underway to inspect all devices, targeting mid and high-ranking members of the IRGC. The official revealed that most devices were homemade or imported from China and Russia, raising fears of infiltration by Israeli agents. The IRGC's concerns are not unfounded. Iran has been on high alert since Israel's alleged attempt to sabotage its missile program in 2023. As a result, security measures at Iran's nuclear and missile facilities have increased significantly. While the country's ruling establishment is worried about the threat from Israel, it's also concerned about the potential for internal sabotage. As one official noted, "There has never, ever been such tight security and extreme measures in place as there are now." Iran's military uses a range of encrypted communication devices, including walkie-talkies, for secure communication. The country has developed its own military-grade radio transmissions through its defense industry to avoid reliance on foreign imports, especially due to Western sanctions imposed on Tehran over its nuclear program.
