This type of flu virus is always changing to avoid our body’s defense system. These changes are called “antigenic shift and drift. ” This makes it tough to fight with vaccines.

In the U. S. , about 55 people have caught this flu, and all of them were near infected chickens or cows. Most of these people recovered quickly. But in Canada, a teenager got very sick after possibly being near an infected animal. This shows that the flu could become very dangerous. Scientists are concerned because they don’t know how the flu will spread. If it starts spreading easily between people, the number of cases could increase rapidly. Right now, getting a vaccine ready is possible, but it might take time. There's a push to make a new type of vaccine using mRNA that could speed up things. The upcoming seasonal flu is more of a worry right now than the bird flu. It’s important to get your flu shot as soon as possible, especially when people gather for holidays.
