Is the Crime Rate Really at a 50-Year Low?
United StatesSunday, September 15, 2024
The National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) is another main crime data source. It began in the 1990s and largely corroborates FBI data, but with some differences. The NCVS attempts to track both reported and unreported crimes by conducting interviews with a large, national sample of people. However, it too has limitations, such as extrapolating from its data and not interviewing enough people in each state to create accurate estimates.
Over a long period of time, the data shows that reported violent crime consistently decreased since it peaked in the 1990s. However, on a shorter time scale, we cannot draw a strong conclusion. The FBI data suggests a 50-year low, but with limitations. The NCVS data also shows a decrease in violent crime, but with its own limitations. Ultimately, we need to consider the complexities and limitations of crime data when drawing conclusions.
