Israel Keeps Fighting in Lebanon Despite New Ceasefire Deal

Southern LebanonThursday, June 4, 2026

Israel has decided to keep its forces stationed in southern Lebanon for the moment, even after a fresh ceasefire was announced. The Israeli Defense Chief stated that residents displaced by the military will not be allowed to return.

This declaration came immediately after Washington agreed that the ceasefire would remain in effect only if Hezbollah stops firing. Israeli troops will stay near Beaufort Castle—a historic fortress seized last Saturday—and plan to dismantle what they label as terrorist bases.

Israel also emphasized that, with U.S. support, it retains the freedom to strike targets in Beirut should attacks on Israeli communities continue. Lebanon and Israel had previously agreed to pause fighting, but violence persisted even after an earlier truce in April that was extended in May. The new U.S.-backed ceasefire is still being tested on the ground.
