Italy Steps Into AI Supply Chain Pact With the US

Miami, USAFriday, June 26, 2026
Italy has agreed to become part of a U. S. initiative aimed at securing artificial‑intelligence supply chains, even after a sharp disagreement between its Prime Minister and President Trump. The decision comes as the country prepares to sign a memorandum of understanding with U. S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, according to a foreign‑policy official. The initiative, known as Pax Silica, gathers allies to safeguard key components of AI technology—from critical minerals and energy sources to advanced manufacturing and model training. Recently, the European Commission joined the effort, and the Netherlands confirmed its participation earlier this week.
A special envoy for innovation attended a Washington summit as an observer and helped issue a joint declaration on AI opportunities with several other nations, including Britain, Germany, Japan, India and South Korea. Italy was scheduled to formalise its involvement in Miami on Monday, but the trip was postponed after a public spat between Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and President Trump over Italy’s stance on the Iran conflict. Despite the diplomatic friction, officials say that the partnership will allow Italy to resume where it left off and strengthen its position in the evolving AI landscape.
