IVF Decision in Alabama: A Governor’s Concern

The court decided that an 1872 law, which allows parents to sue for the death of a minor child, applies to unborn children as well. This includes frozen embryos used in IVF treatments. The governor believes this decision could significantly impact fertility procedures and even halt some treatments in Alabama. Governor Sununu shared his thoughts during an interview with CNN's Dana Bash. He pointed out that the chief justice, Tom Parker, might have gone too far by invoking religious beliefs in his opinion. Parker wrote that destroying embryos would incur the wrath of a holy God.

Sununu emphasized the importance of separating church and state. He said that relying solely on personal religious views to make legal decisions could lead to chaos. He also mentioned that this approach might not be accepted in many states, including New Hampshire. The governor noted that courts should follow the law rather than personal beliefs.
